Cube library
A big empty wall with inner coat, under a ceiling with barrel vaults. Everything white (or at least off-white) and a big French window that brings a lot of light in the living room.
And to me, white paper to think and design a wall library for books and a future bigger television.
I had to think about how to construct a structure that could self-sustain and, at the same time, discharge its weight to the ground.
So I remembered a very particular and intriguing library in a New York apartment (maybe), very simple but so full of character in its simplicity. The various blocks were made with simple wooden boards, then colored with different tones of the wood, some black pieces, some white. In that one only a great amount of books.
In my case, instead, I needed bigger spaces to put a lamp, a tv, a piece of furniture with wooden doors I designed some years ago and, always on the floor, they needed a close space with big drawers to put the children toys and papers.
So the under space was ready to sustain the above weight. After some designs with different proposals for the cubes, the clients decided for the one in the pictures below: different little and colored blocks closed at the top by a full length white “cube” with a little nice detail that’s a square door with chicken net.
Rusty drawer covers, natural colors for the recovered wood and a nice ensemble.
